Pectin is a soluble fibre found in plant cell walls. The complex carbohydrate regulates the flexibility of the tissues and ensures the moisture content of the plant.
The pectin content of individual plants varies considerably. Apples, grapefruit, orange and apricot, for example, have a high level of pectin.
While pectins generally have a number of health benefits, apple pectin also has special properties. The apple diet by Heisler (1803) and Moro (1929) is one of the most well-known applications of pectins to compensate for ailments of the digestive system.
