Resveratrol is a phytochemical found in more than 70 plant species. It belongs to the group of polyphenols. Polyphenols protect plants from environmental influences.
The first known resveratrol source was considered to be a white lily (Lilium candidum) from Japan. In the 1960s, the so-called Japanese knotweed was discovered to be a natural resveratrol supplier. The Japanese knotweed is considered a pest plant in many countries around the world because of its aggressive spreading.
The plant is used in the Chinese and Japanese medicine.
What is Trans-Resveratrol?
Resveratrol exists in two different forms: Trans-resveratrol and cis-resveratrol. Both forms consist of the same molecular parts, but these are arranged differently. Trans-Resveratrol is said to have the greater biological activity of the two.
Good sources of Resveratrol
Certain plants, such as red grapes, Japanese knotweed, cassia seeds, passion fruit, white tea, plums, cranberries, blueberries, raspberries, pistachios and peanuts naturally produce resveratrol as a protective response to environmental stress. Resveratrol can also be found in cocoa powder and in dark chocolate.
