Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) is known for its beneficial properties since ancient times. The original home of the plant are the Andes, the regions of Peru and Bolivia. It come to Europe after the year 1500 and was kept in gardens as an ornamental plant. The orange-red and sometimes yellow flowers of the 15 to 30 centimetre high plant upgrade every garden optically. It wasn't until the 20th century that the modern scientific research took a closer look at nasturtium and confirmed its effect.
Active ingredients of nasturtium
Nasturtium contains valuable sulphurous mustard oils or mustard oil glycosides, which are so-called secondary plant substances. Their purpose is to keep natural enemies of all kinds away, including certain beetles and insects, but also harmful microorganisms. Nasturtium uses the mustard oils to protect itself frombacteria, fungi and viruses.
Furthermore, nasturtium contains vitamins, mainly vitamin C, minerals and carotenoids.
Tolerability of nasturtium
The mustard oils of nasturtium can be resorbed into the blood easily and are well tolerable. They already enter the blood in the upper part of the intestines and do not attack the good intestinal bacteria. After the resorption, they are bound to proteins and circulate in the blood stream.
