Acetyl-L-carnitine, also known under the abbreviations ALC and ALCAR, is a special form of the amino acid L-carnitine. The speciality lies in its chemical structure, as the name already reveals, an acetyl group has been added to the amino acid L-carnitine. This acetyl group makes the amino acid more soluble in water and can therefore be absorbed and utilised very well.
L-carnitine in the organism
The conventional amino acid L-carnitine can be produced by the body itself from the amino acids L-lysine and L-methionine and is therefore actually not essential. However, the production of L-carnitine also depends on an adequate supply of iron, vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, folic acid and niacin. Therefore, in the event of a deficiency, it may be advisable to supply the body with L-carnitine through food supplements, especially if there is an increased need.
