What is L-histidine?
It is a semi-essential amino acid. Semi-essential, because the body is able to produce small amounts itself. An intake via food is however highly recommended. As a proteinogenic amino acid, it is involved in the formation of proteins. In addition, it belongs to the basic amino acids, along with L-arginine and L-lysine.
Histidine in foods
Histidine is found in both animal and plant foods. Particularly high contents are found in meat (beef, poultry), fish (salmon, tuna), pulses, milk and wheat germ.In food, histidine is always present bound as a component of proteins.

L-Tryptophan: essential amino acid
Basically, amino acids can be divided into three different groups as far as their importance is concerned: essential, semi-essential, and non-essential amino acids.Non-essential means that there is usually no need to provide it through food, as the body is able to produce it itself. This only depends on a sufficient supply of macronutrients (fat, protein, carbohydrates).Semi-essential amino acids can be produced in the organism from other amino acids or directly. However, the amount is usually so small that an intake via food or food supplements is recommended.Essential amino acids must always be supplied to the body with food or supplements, as these cannot be produced.
L-tryptophan as a building block of proteins
A further distinction is made between proteinogenic and non-proteinogenic amino acids. The latter is not used in the organism to form proteins but to fulfil numerous other functions. These include, for example, the formation of hormones and neurotransmitters. In contrast, proteinogenic amino acids serve as building blocks for proteins, which in turn are needed for countless tasks in the body.
L-Tryptophan in food
L-tryptophan is primarily found in protein-rich animal foods such as eggs, meat, poultry, dairy products and fish, but vegetable foods also contain large amounts of amino acid. These include legumes (beans, lentils), nuts (hazelnuts, peanuts, cashew kernels), and cereal products (oats, spelt, bran, buckwheat).
